Commercial Lines Automated Underwriting Manager

Location:  Westfield Center, OH Home Office centric hybrid work arrangements

 

The CL Automated Underwriting Manager assists the Underwriting Practices Leader in ensuring the quality and integrity of automated and transactional underwriting and pricing decisions in the commercial lines segment. 

Responsible for the establishment, enablement, optimization, and governance of the following to ensure achievement of target financial metrics and pass through rates that drive profitability, growth, and operational efficiency:

  • Industry and line of business risk appetite and risk selection
  • Underwriting, pricing, and authority policies, guidelines, and rules
  • 3rd party customer data enrichment and underwriting artificial intelligence & learning models
  • Portfolio-level data integrity, risk profile, and underwriting & pricing quality KPIs

 

The CL Automated Underwriting Manager manages the automated underwriting rules and provides input to the strategic direction to improve the line of business and industry results from monitoring and analyzing rules, loss trends, production, and emerging issues. The manager drives successful implementation of system changes through collaboration with key business partners. 

 

Essential Functions (primary functions and/or reasons the job exists in order of importance)

  1. Assists the Underwriting Practices Leader in ensuring the quality and integrity of automated and transactional underwriting and pricing decisions in the commercial lines segment through the development and optimization of underwriting artificial intelligence and learning models, and the enablement and governance of 3rd party data integrations via multi-channeled underwriting platforms.
  2. Leads and serves as an advocate for risk prequalification, underwriting policies and rules, account pricing, product eligibility, authority / referral rules, risk and underwriting quality, and automated workflows.
  3. Serves as the company’s subject matter expert for underwriting patterns and pricing, referral and authority tables.
  4. Leverages understanding of risk exposures and controls relationship to profitability to effectively monitor, modify, and create underwriting rules to drive profitability in the CL segment.
  5. Proactively monitors and optimizes underwriting rules performance for CL.
    1. Collaborates with Quality Assurance, Actuarial, and Business leaders to research plan variances, analyze loss trends, ensure adherence to sector / underwriting guidelines, and monitor other metrics (e.g. pricing trends, large losses).  
    2. Proactively identifies and recommends solutions to improve the health of specific lines of business or Industries. 
    3. Provides underwriting guideline support to Product Development Managers. 
  6. Develops proposals, project plans, leads key activities, and is the subject matter expert related to the detailed design and implementation of automated underwriting, pricing, and workflows associated with product/underwriting enhancements, launches or discontinuations.

 

Desired Qualifications/Experience/Certification/Education (in order of importance)

  1. 8+ years of experience in the property / casualty industry with proven history of advancement within the product management and/or underwriting/sales disciplines.
  2. Experience with and in-depth knowledge of two or more of the following:  automating commercial insurance products, processes and functions through proprietary policy administration and industry comparative quoting platforms, using artificial intelligence & analytical learning models, and supported by third party data integrations.
  3. Experience contributing to strategy development and understanding the impact and implications of decisions on other areas of the organization through previous projects and work experiences.  
  4. Experience managing projects of various sizes including developing business requirements, delegating tasks, coaching others, and ensuring projects are completed on-time and within budget.
  5. Experience tactfully and persuasively handling conflict.
  6. Solid oral, written, and interpersonal skills, including facilitation and group presentation skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in an office environment for 40+ hours per week (including sitting, standing and working on a computer for extended periods of time).
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a collaborative work environment utilizing various technologies such as:  telephone, computer, web, voice, teleconferencing, e-mail, etc.
  • Ability to travel as required.
  • Ability to operate an automobile within the parameters of the driving policy.
