Account Manager – Contract Surety

Location:  Grand Rapids, MI Service Office

Salary Range:  $81,000 - $94,000


Account Manager Job Summary 


The Account Manager is responsible for marketing, underwriting, processing and servicing surety business as assigned or within a defined territory. Responsible for decisions on acceptance or declination of bonds within established authority. Under general supervision, develops and underwrites profitable surety business by visiting assigned agencies or services offices. May serve as subject matter expert, working with other bond personnel on selected contract accounts, including various financial and workload analysis.


Essential Functions (primary functions and/or reasons the job exists in order of importance)

1. Responsible for marketing, underwriting, processing and servicing surety business as assigned or within a defined territory. 

2. Makes timely and competent decisions on acceptance or declination of bonds within established authority.  Submits/makes recommendations for approval of assigned risks in excess of authority.

3. Visit agencies or service offices to develop and underwrite profitable business or assist in resolving problems. 

4. Communicates effectively and build relationships with agents, agency clients, other Service Office and Home Office personnel on all business related situations.

5. Provides technical assistance to leader on selected accounts, including financial analysis, conducting inquiries and verifications, transmittal of information, and requests for approval.

6. As assigned, assists in training activities related to underwriting, marketing, and processing surety business for less experienced bond personnel.

7. Meets or exceeds Departmental Service Standard by ensuring accuracy, completeness and procedural consistency of assigned files and the operation of reporting, processing and filing systems for all bonds produced by assigned agents or service offices.

8. Develops knowledge of local markets and creates and increase business contacts/ network in assigned market area. 

9. Travels as often as needed including regular utilization of assigned fleet vehicle in order to cover assigned territory. This may involve traveling on short notice or other daily driving duties as assigned regardless of location.


Desired Qualifications/Experience/Certification/Education (in order of importance)

1. Minimum of 3 years of successful surety underwriting experience.  

2. Experience profitably underwriting accounts, servicing business, and building relationships. 

3. Experience with financial analysis and risk assessment. 

4. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. 

5. Effective negotiation skills. 

6. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. 

7. Strong attention to detail. 

8. Strong organizational skills gained through previous work experiences.  

9. Experience maintaining a high degree of customer service. 

10. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college OR commensurate work experience. 

11. Valid driver’s license and a driving record that conforms to company standards.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  

• Ability to work effectively in an office environment for 40+ hours per week (including sitting, standing and working on a computer for extended periods of time).

• Ability to communicate effectively in a collaborative work environment utilizing various technologies such as:  telephone, computer, web, voice, teleconferencing, e-mail etc.

• Ability to travel as required.

• Ability to operate an automobile within the parameters of the driving policy including ability to drive for extended periods of time, under a variety of conditions, including night driving.
