From concept and design, to the final touches and updates, our Developers are continuously bringing new ideas and solutions to the table to meet the desired needs of our business.  Westfield is on a journey to expand our modern API platform, MuleSoft, by building reusable, secure, and robust API’s allowing us to meet agent and customer needs in a digital marketplace.   On this team, you will be a leader designing and creating reusable API components that make our software engineering process more efficient, and you will help to foster a developer community focused on MuleSoft across several project and support teams in order to establish and enforce best practices.  A strong ability to influence, mentor, and be the “go-to” technical expert on modern API’s built on MuleSoft will make you successful in this role.


Lead Application Developer Job Summary

Location:  Westfield Center, OH or remote work within Westfield’s operating territory

Salary:  $119,308 - $155,100


A Lead Application Developer works in a production support and/or project team environment to deliver both custom-developed and package-based software.  Provides leadership and technical guidance to other Application Developers, other groups, projects, and related work efforts. A Lead Application Developer can support a variety of technologies that may include, but are not limited to, the following: Java and related tools, Mainframe and related tools, PeopleSoft and related tools, ECM, Cognos.


Essential Functions (primary functions and/or reasons the job exists in order of importance)

  1. Works in a production support and/or project team environment to deliver both custom-developed and package-based software.
  2. Leads, coaches and mentors application developers, other team members, and delivery activities associated with existing applications or projects.
  3. Monitors work queues, assigns work to internal and external resources , and works with other leads.
  4. Oversees and reviews the translation of business and system requirements into technical requirements and design documents for the proposed solution.
  5. Prepares and/or reviews estimates, creates designs, performs coding and unit testing for custom-developed applications.  May delegate work associated with these activities.
  6. Performs quality assurance functions including unit testing, system testing, integration testing, and overall technical oversight.  Works with the Lead Test Analyst on the overall test strategy for the proposed solution.
  7. Leads activities associated with application asset planning, asset roadmaps, release management, and solution design.
  8. Provides subject matter expertise and technical leadership on a variety of issues and initiatives inside and outside of their group.
  9. Leads collaboration efforts with Architects on various solutions and technology initiatives.
  10. Coordinates communications with customer(s) and attends prioritization meetings.
  11. Organizes business continuity activities for team and ensures security standards are met.
  12. Leads process and/or system improvement activities associated with the immediate team and/or group.
  13. Serves as a primary point of contact for application or project team.
  14. Develops and presents appropriate metrics and measurements to management.
  15. Adheres to software development lifecycle and service management processes.
  16. Serves as a subject matter expert level of knowledge with respect to relevant technology, tools, processes and related best practices.
  17. Travels occasionally in order to participate in special assignments, training, and/or travel between office locations.


Desired Qualifications/Experience/Certification/Education (in order of importance)

  1. A minimum of 7 years’ experience performing application development and/or production support.
  2. 6+ years’ experience successfully working on high complexity assignments/projects.
  3. Direct or indirect leadership experience overseeing developers.
  4. Experience mentoring, coaching, motivating, and positively influencing others.
  5. Strong technical leadership skills (e.g. architecture, planning, estimating).
  6. Actively learns through experimentation when handling new situations/problems and utilizes lessons from past success and failures.
  7. Strong time management skills including the ability to plan work and set priorities.
  8. Strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills resulting in the ability to interact with all levels in the organization.
  9. Bachelor’s degree in a technical (e.g. computer science, information systems, engineering) field or commensurate work experience.
  10. Valid driver’s license and a driving record that conforms to company standards.


Physical Requirements (specific to the role)

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

  • Ability to work effectively in an office environment for 40+ hours per week (including sitting, standing and working on a computer for extended periods of time).
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a collaborative work environment utilizing various technologies such as:  telephone, computer, web, voice, teleconferencing, e-mail, etc.
  • Ability to travel as required.
